Tackling the Plastic Problem

The Prime Minister launched a 25 year Environment Plan in January 2018 including a pledge to eradicate all avoidable plastic waste by 2042.

Within the Spring Statement 2018 the Chancellor announced a call for evidence to explore how changes to the tax system or specific charges may be implemented to reduce the amount of single-use plastics that are used.

The government would like to understand how plastics are used and the life cycle of such plastics. This may then be considered together with other environmental proposals with a view to developing a tax system that will address the concerns. There are currently no set ideas so it remains to be seen whether a charge, similar to the sugar tax, or a special rate of VAT may be applied. Any interested parties are invited to reply by the deadline of 18 May 2018.
