Markel Tax expands specialist tax consultancy teams

Markel Tax has made a number of new team hires, boosting several specialist advisory teams within the organisation.

Mark Baycroft and Imran Umarji have joined the Owner-Managed Business (OMB) tax team. Both arrive from Moore Stephens/BDO. Mark joins as a Director, bringing over 20 years of SME advisory experience. Specialising in corporate reconstructions and reorganisations, Mark also advises on property transactions affecting OMBs, including stamp duty land tax and annual tax on enveloped dwellings. Imran, who joins as a senior consultant, has for a number of years advised on complex technical issues particularly for corporate entities, from stand-alone businesses to group companies.

Andrew Paschalis joins the Tax Investigations team as a senior consultant. Andrew previously worked at PWC and, prior to that, as a trained tax inspector at HMRC for six years. Andrew’s experience includes time in HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service offshore team and Large Business directorate. Following his departure from HMRC, he has assisted clients, including High Net Worth individuals and trusts, in dealing with complex historical offshore tax issues. Andrew’s significant experience with all types of HMRC enquiries, including under Code of Practice 8 and 9, information powers and penalties, further reinforces Markel Tax’s investigations offering.

Punnit Vyas has joined Markel Tax as a senior consultant with over 16 years as a VAT consultant in top 20 mid-tier accountancy firms, and within HMRC. Punnit, a chartered tax advisor, has advised clients on a range of VAT issues. He has also worked across a range of sectors, including property, ‘partially exempt’ businesses, financial services, technology, retail and hospitality, international cross-border supplies, not-for-profit and the public sector.

Nicola Goldsmith has joined the team as head of private client.  With over 22 years’ experience in tax and an excellent knowledge of offshore trusts and international tax, Nicola advises on a range of private client issues, from offshore pensions, to UK and offshore trusts and residence and domicile matters.

Commenting on the appointments, Melanie Hicks, managing director of Markel Tax, said: “The rapid expansion of the Markel Tax team is an indication of our future ambition. UK accountancy firms and their SME clients are in regular need of specialist tax advice, which we can offer from some of the most experienced and knowledgeable tax specialists in the business.”

All five team members will be based in Markel Tax’s London office.
