Job summary

The vacancy will report into the Director of Sales and Marketing based in Birmingham within Markel’s regional broker sales channel - owning the portfolio of brokers across the central region of the UK and responsible for driving growth across our portfolio or sector propositions and differentiated SME product solutions. This role leads a team of front line experienced senior underwriters and business development resources who manage our central brokers across multiple classes of SME Commercial lines sectors.

In addition this role takes ownership of our Broker Connect capability, which supports all transactional underwriting requirements for our UK-Wide broker channel, as well as owns the marketing and support for our smaller UK Wide brokers – with whom we manage their relationship on a distance basis.

This region has grown significantly in the past 24 months and expected to continue to do so. This role also provides the candidate with branch manager responsibilities as the senior leader within our Birmingham office, housing 25 people.

Ultimately, this role is responsible for achieving new business and retention goals, pipeline development and ensuring underwriting is undertaken to our high standards and margin.

Duties and accountabilites
  • Meet and exceed the regional new business targets for 2020, managing production to phasing and product/line mix.
  • Drive business development resource to optimise broker portfolio in region, across all product lines (existing and new) ensuring broker development plans and relationship/engagement is in place to grow pipeline.
  • Ensure team has appropriate management, control and oversight of new business pipeline and volumes to ensure accurate and optimal underwriting of new business opportunity to maximise conversion and balance underwriting integrity.
  • Continue to evolve segmentation of broker portfolio to ensure activity and broker development plans are in line with strategic, key and development broker aspirations and strategy, whilst evolving use of CRM to ensure activity, pipeline and broker contact information is kept up to date and accurate.
  • Manage team activity in line with underwriting and compliance guidelines
Skills, knowledge and experience
The successful candidate will:
  • Experience of working within the commercial broker or at least within a senior capability in an insurance broker environment.  
  • Strong leadership capability, with proven track record of managing front line broker sales teams
  • Strong understanding of pipeline management and BD process setting
  • Experience of managing a team of front line underwriters, with previous underwriting authority experience required
  • Commercial lines marketplace desired, but, strong broker led insurance sales leadership experience most important.
  • This individual must extol the discipline of sales and pipeline management, with strong leadership credentials and a proven ability to influcne broker placement resulting in growth – profitably.
